The Dead Return
Today, when I was perusing some TOEFL reading passages, I read about a very stirring and even slightly spine-chilling fiesta in Japan called "Obon".
This festival for dead is held once a year, around July. At this cheerful occasion, for on this day, the dead are said to return to their homes and they are welcomes by the living.
Interestingly they are expected to be hungry after their long journey, so food is laid out for them. And also some special lights named as lantern are hung outside houses to help the dead find their way. Also all that night long people dance and sing and in the early morning the food which had been laid out for the dead is thrown into the river or sea owing to the fact that it is considered eating that food brings unlucky for any living.
In coastal towns, the mentioned lanterns are placed in water after finishing festival. So then you can see a moving spectacle, crowds of people stand on the shore watching thousands of lanterns slowly drift out to the sea, who said to be guiding the dead on their returning journey to other world until they drift away from sights.
